Professorship in Bamboo Utilization Technology (Deadline: October 7, 2018)

Applications are invited for one tenured or tenure-track professorship in either assistant, associate or full professor level in the area of Bamboo Utilization Technology (BUT). The position will be located in the Department of Wood Science, Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia.

The Department of Wood Science currently includes 16 faculty members working across a range of disciplines. The Department runs the BSc (Wood Products Processing) program – the largest such program in North America – which fosters direct contacts with industry stakeholders through a vibrant co-op program. The Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) through its extension and applied research programs offers extensive links with Canadian wood products manufacturers and opportunities to work with existing and emerging companies and organizations. The Faculty of Forestry, one of the largest such faculties in the world, includes over 70 faculty members and provides opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with world-class researchers. The Faculty of Forestry offers a range of traditional research degrees and a growing suite of course-based masters programs that attract students from around the world.

Position details

The successful candidate is expected to spend portions of his/her academic time in China for research and graduate student supervising. Applicants must also have demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. The candidate is also expected to secure research funding from external sources such as NSERC and other governmental and industrial organizations. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications required

A PhD degree in a renewable biomaterials related discipline and strong commitment to educating undergraduate and professional master’s students along with the development of a strong research program are required for this appointment. Ideally, applicants should have research experience in bamboo utilization technology. The successful candidate will coordinate joint projects between UBC – Wood Science Department, CAWP and the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan in Beijing, China by focusing on manufacturing technologies for the production of high quality, value-added bamboo-wood composite materials.
