Research Associate – FPB/B group, Wood Science Department (Deadline September 3)

A full-time Research Associate position is available within the Forest Products Biotechnology/Bioenergy (FPB/B) Research Group, Department of Wood Science.

Responsibilities

The Research Associate will develop and conduct research on biofuels. The work will involve gathering and analyzing data, drafting reports/papers and covering the overall supply chain of biofuels including feedstock production and logistics, conversion technologies assessment, refinery co-processing, the LCA of biofuels, biofuels policy, etc.
The Research Associate (RA) will be also help manage projects related to biomass supply chain modeling and analysis, biofuels development and the policy environment required for promotion of biofuels production and consumption.
The RA will help coordinate the activities of the IEA Bioenergy Task 39 (Liquid Biofuels), including website management, editing and publishing regular newsletters and preparation of meeting agendas, minutes and presentations. Good organization skills and a demonstrated excellent work ethic will be required. The individual will be multi-tasking, working on a variety of projects and reports, such as updating technical reports on drop-in biofuels, assessing the rate of commercialization of biomass-to-biofuels developments as well as compare-and-contrasting (implementation agendas report) the various international policies that have been used to commercialize biofuels.
Task 39 will produce three newsletters a year. The RA will have major responsibility for the delivery of these newsletters, working with international contributors. Therefore, good writing skills are a requirement.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Science or Engineering with 3-5 years postdoctoral research experience in the field of Biomass, Biofuels and Bioenergy
  • A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of biomass and biofuels supply chains and the collaborations/ interactions that involve the entire spectrum of stakeholders from biomass producers to end users
  • Strong technical background in both biomass and biofuels supply chain simulation and optimization modeling and analysis. Familiarity with models such as ExtendSim and AIMMS will be an asset.
  • Good writing skills and a proven track-record of success in attracting funding to support research activities.
  • Strong project management and good interpersonal skills desired.
  • Demonstrated experience in working in a challenging research environment in a high profile research organization, operating in a politically sensitive arena.
