BSCW – Sinclar Group Forest Products Ltd., Fort St. James, BC

During my first Co-op work term, I worked as a Quality Control Technician at Apollo Forest Products Ltd., which is a part of Sinclar Group Forest Products Ltd. Apollo produces lumber with high quality, and they also show great concern for the environment and community. As a member of the QC department, my daily tasks include covering the process from the sawmill to the planner. Size control is one of the most important aspects of my job. Every day I have to check the width and the thickness of boards from different machines, such as the band saw, the gang saw, the canter and the edger. The goal is to ensure the size is on target. If they’re not, I need to change the bias of the saw. When the boards are stacked and become a load and then sent to a kiln and dried, I check to confirm the heat treat is completed. Besides my daily tasks, I also joined two projects related to the ideal log dispersion and the board shrinkage. This allowed me to have more time to practice data gathering and analyzing skills. I also improved my communication skills and tried to handle multiple tasks at the same time. I feel so lucky to be a part of a company that makes progress on production and profit with other employees. The Co-op program is wonderful chance for students to get experience and real practice before they get into the industry.
